What to look out for when booking a magician

any people come to me with the question of how to tell if they are booking a good or bad magician & What to look out for when booking a magician to know they are getting the right person for the event.

There's a lot of different information out there, and if you don't know what to look for, it can be hard to tell the difference between a good and a bad magician.

What's the difference?

Let's start by looking at what the difference means to you and your event.

A good magician can engage and excite your guests while entertaining and heightening everyone's experience. Ultimately, a magician's job is to entertain your guests and leave everyone feeling amazed and with a sense of wonder about what they've seen.

A bad magician will do the opposite, not engaging with your audience fully and leaving your guests feeling bored and with an awful taste in their mouths. When looking around at different magicians, you can spot signs of what kind of magician you might be talking to or what website you're looking at. Once you know how to spot the signs, you can use them to ensure you get someone who will do an excellent job at your event and astound your guests.

What experience do they have?

The first thing to look at is what experience they've had. This is best looked at on any of their websites. A magician with experience will have plenty of material on their website showing what kind of magician they are and what to expect. First, look to see if they have a showreel. A showreel will give you a good overview of what to expect from them and their performance; when you're watching a magician's showreel, look at the people around them and see how they are reacting; that'll give you an excellent example of what to expect from the magician when they are performing for your guests.

Photographs are another way to gauge experience. Look for photos and see how people are reacting to the magic and think about if that's the same reactions you want from your guests when they are watching a magician.

Ask questions

After you have looked at the website and contacted the magician, they should arrange to talk to you and answer any questions you may have. Don't be afraid to ask them about specific things you want to know and find out how best they can help you with your event. It's a good sign if the magician can draw from experience and sound confident with how he answers the question. It might be a good idea to also write down what's important to you and your event before the phone call so that you already know what you're looking for and want to ask about.

What do they specialise in?

One of the questions you should definitely look to them to answer is what they specialise in. Most magicians will of honed their skills to fit one specific function or type of magic performance. If someone claims they can do everything and work as a jack of all trades, that should be a red flag. While it's possible that a highly skilled and experienced magician could do everything and be telling the truth, it's unlikely. I'd recommend checking to ensure they have the experience before booking if you have any doubts.

Do they care?

The last advice I can give you is to look out for how much the magician hears you and expresses an interest in your event. Performing to a lot of good magicians is more than just a paycheck. Through experience, a good magician should know that no two events are the same and be willing to work with you to make sure they are a good fit for your event and that they can do everything possible to make your event special.
