How to throw a killer private party
You have probably been to at least a dozen private parties and even went as far as to host a few, either at a venue or your own house party.
People don't tend to overthink them. They set a date, invite people, turn the music on, and hope for the best.
This all works, and I've been to several private parties that have been put together this way, but they aren't the most memorable experiences, and it's hard over time to have one stick out from the other.
If you want to throw a killer party that people will remember for years to come and you can take all the credit for, here are a few helpful tips I've learnt that will make your event stand out and be something you will remember and talk about long after the event has taken place.
Theming
One thing you can do is decide on a theme for your event; this can be anything, depending on what your event is for and what kind of things you are into. For example, you could do an Alice in wonderland themed house party with guests dressing as different characters and decorations that fit the theme.
Your theme can be even more straightforward than that, such as a colour or a keyword like "outlandish", and then let your guests have fun interpreting that word now rather than just finding the date and showing up on the day your guests are already engaged in your party by thinking about what they can do to meet the theme and are getting excited at the opportunity to get creative in a fun way!
Looking at your day's entertainment, you can find something that now meets your theme. For example, a skilled magician can do magic that matches your theme or come in character as someone to complete your theme. You can get creative with what you do alongside your guests, getting everyone excited and involved before the event starts!
Structure
Once you have a theme, you can start looking at how you want to structure your party. You probably have a lot of different ideas for entertainment and activities at this point. You want to start looking at the structure of your day, write down all your thoughts and how you will introduce those things to your guests and in what order; start looking and what flows on from what and how much time you think will be good to spend with each thing.
For example, you might want an hour at the start for people to mingle and socialise, then have an hour where everyone plays a game, then bring out the food before you go into the other room where the magician has set up for a formal magic show for over an hour. Having a structure and a plan will help you feel relaxed and give your guests a sense of what to look forward to at the party, giving them a feeling of surprise every hour or few hours or whatever works for you, helping to keep the energy up and everyone engaged!
Your entertainment
When looking at your structure, you want to make it varied. Don't have four hours of games planned. At that point, people will start to get bored and have a pretty strong idea of how the day will go; you want a showpiece to put right in the middle, something that will stand out to everyone there and they won't see coming.
A magician fitting your theme and structure is perfect for this, you can have a separate room set up with a magician inside and have the guests come in and sit inside not knowing what is about to happen, or you can plan it out to be locked room magic, where you can go around and invite small groups of guests to go inside the room and see the magician for fifteen minutes and sworn to secrecy before leaving, or have mix and mingle magic where a magician walks around your party in character and amazes each of your guests in turn.
As I said before, you can have this fitting your theme; using the Alice in wonderland example, you can have your guests invited to tea with the mad hatter, where they go inside and sit with me in character as the mad hatter while also blowing their minds with some incredible magic!
